Press Release: SIPRI Ranked as Top Global Think Tank

(Stockholm) The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is ranked as one of the leading and most influential think tanks worldwide by the US Foreign Policy magazine in their Think Tank Index 2008.

The index, which is compiled for Foreign Policy by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies program at the University of Pennsylvania, evaluated a total of 5465 think tanks worldwide. SIPRI ranked third among non-US based think tanks, second among think tanks in Western Europe, and sixth globally in the category of ‘Security and International Affairs’.

‘SIPRI is proud to be once again so highly ranked among the very best in the world. As the survey is based on the views of our peers worldwide, this comes as a great honour’, said SIPRI Director Dr Bates Gill. ‘We look forward to working with our partners and supporters around the world to maintain SIPRI’s leading role in understanding the conditions for global peace and security.’

Established in 1966, SIPRI is an independent research institute focusing on international security, arms control, and disarmament. SIPRI has built its reputation on authoritative, balanced research, including its flagship publication, the SIPRI Yearbook (release date for 2009 issue: 8 June). SIPRI aims to further strengthen its impact in 2009 by establishing a greater presence in Brussels, Beijing, and Washington, DC.
